I grew up in Deacon street in the eightees, and have always pondered similar questions about the areas history. After looking at a map from 1889, a footpath ran from Coton road, following the line of Rose lane, up towards the canal, at approximately the site of Cheverel court. It appears that the surrounding area consisted of fields seperated by hedgerows, which bear no resemblance to the modern topography of the streets, houses or gardens of the Cheverel street area. A later map from 1904 illustrates the street plan in working progress, with only a few houses built. however, the path of Cheverel street, is drawn in, completing its modern plan, but without the houses. As is Deacon street and Henry street, each containing only a handful of properties compared to today. All streets are labeled as they appear today. So, in answer to Jo’s question, I might conclude that Cheverel street’s title has always been so, although I am no real authority, I may be mistaken. I think that the name was taken from a George Elliot reference to Arbury hall in ‘Scenes of a Clerical Life’ when she calls it ‘Cheverel Manor’. Although again, there could be more to it than that, as most of the neighbouring streets seem to have royal title connections. Does anybody know more about the origins of street names on this part of chilvers coton?
